lusitano Enjoy this print? Visit us at our store Gifts for Horse Lovers The Lusitano horse is acknowledged as an Iberian horse originating in Portugal. Under the Roman rule the Portuguese territories were known as Lusitania and thus the name Lusitano.

The Lusitano has been used through out the centuries for everything from warfare to dressage to bullfighting. His temperament is infalable and his mind inquisitive and quick to learn . Of all horse breeds, this one has survived the passing of time and the coming and going of trends, truest to it's origin.

The Iberian horse was introduced to the Americas by explorers and conquistadors like Columbus, Pedro Mendoza and Cabeza de Vaca. In the North and South American Continents, breeds such as Mustangs, Appaloosas, Mangalargas, Campolinas and Quarter Horses are direct or indirect descendants of the Iberians.

In 1967 the Portuguese Stud Book (Livro Genealogico Portugues de Equinos) was officially introduced under the responsibility of the Portuguese Association of Lusitano Horse Breeders (Associação Portuguesa de Criadores do Cavalo Puro Sangue Lusitano - APSL).

Today the modern Lusitano can be seen excelling in such sports as dressage, jumping, cutting and reining.
